Asphalt Paving Versus Concrete

Choosing between asphalt and concrete paving for your new driveway may not seem like a big decision; after all, it is “just” a driveway and both materials seem pretty basic. However, making the right choice for your budget, preferences and even the climate in which you live requires some serious thought and research.

If you are looking for a lower installation cost, asphalt is your best option. And while it requires more maintenance, asphalt is easier to repair than concrete, with cracks and holes easily sealed and concealed. Need to use your driveway within a day or two after installation? Asphalt also cures quickly, allowing vehicles to drive on it almost immediately. Sealing your asphalt driveway six months to a year following installation, and every three to five years after that, is highly recommended.

Asphalt holds up better through extreme temperature swings due to its ability to shrink and expand accordingly. It should withstand arctic winters and brutally hot summers with minor damage. With the proper care and sealing, an asphalt driveway should last about 20 years.

Concrete driveways go the distance with an average lifespan of 30 years, and are typically low maintenance. With that said, concrete paving is a bit more delicate and succumbs to cracks under extreme pressure, so it is best suited to a moderate climate.

Concrete is easier to work with to achieve different finishes, however, as it can be stained or tinted to a variety of colors. And the possibilities do not end there. Your licensed contractor can likely etch, engrave or stamp concrete to create different designs and looks.

Regardless of which paving material you select, make sure your contractor lays down a well compacted base of gravel prior to installation. Confirm with them how soon you can take vehicles on the driveway and talk to them about any follow-up visits they may need to make in order to complete the project. It is important to sort out these details because you will likely want to start using your driveway as soon as you can.
